Tech compensation continues to be driven by supply and demand for specialized skills. Roles in machine learning, infrastructure, security, and platform engineering consistently command the highest salaries. The gap between generalist and specialist compensation widens at senior levels, where deep expertise in a high-demand area can mean a 50-100% premium over comparable generalist roles.
Company tier matters as much as role. A senior engineer at a pre-IPO growth-stage company with equity may out-earn a principal at a mid-cap public company in total compensation, even if the base salary is lower. When evaluating offers, consider the full package: base, bonus, equity (and its liquidity), benefits, and the trajectory of the company.
Location still affects compensation, but less than before. Fully remote roles from US-based companies often pay 70-90% of the Bay Area rate regardless of where you sit. Companies headquartered in Bharat are increasingly competing for global talent with packages that, adjusted for purchasing power, are highly competitive.
