About the Organisation
A leading international consumer technology organisation operating at the intersection of cybersecurity, privacy, and digital safety is seeking an AI Product Counsel to join its legal team in San Francisco, New York, or Arizona.
The organisation develops widely used consumer software products focused on online protection, identity security, fraud prevention, and digital wellbeing across global markets. It is actively expanding its AI capabilities across its product suite, including machine learning–driven threat detection, automation, and user-facing intelligent features.
The legal team operates in a fast-paced, product-led environment, working closely with engineering, product, data science, security, and compliance teams to enable responsible innovation and scalable AI deployment.
The Role
The AI Product Counsel will provide strategic and hands-on legal support across the development, launch, and lifecycle of AI-enabled consumer products and features. Reporting to senior legal leadership, this role will act as a deeply embedded partner to product and engineering teams, advising on legal risk, regulatory compliance, and responsible AI development.
Based in San Francisco, this role sits within a highly cross-functional environment and offers significant exposure to cutting-edge AI product development within a global consumer technology platform.
The role is ideal for a mid–senior level lawyer who thrives in high-growth, product-driven environments and is comfortable operating independently while helping shape early-stage AI governance and product counselling frameworks at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Provide day-to-day legal advice on AI-enabled product development, including machine learning models, generative AI tools, and automated decision-making systems
Partner closely with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and UX teams across the full product lifecycle (ideation, development, launch, iteration, and scaling)
Advise on U.S. and global privacy and data protection laws, including CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, and evolving AI regulatory frameworks
Counsel on AI governance matters including training data usage, data provenance, model risk, bias/fairness, explainability, and transparency requirements
Support development and operationalisation of internal AI governance frameworks, policies, and risk assessment processes
Review and negotiate commercial agreements involving AI technologies, data processing arrangements, and third-party model providers
Monitor and interpret emerging AI legislation, regulatory guidance, and enforcement trends in the U.S. and internationally, translating them into practical product guidance
Advise on product risk areas including consumer protection, deceptive practices, cybersecurity risk, and platform liability considerations
Collaborate with privacy, compliance, security, and trust & safety teams on incident response and escalation involving AI systems
Contribute to the evolution of broader product counselling practices across consumer cybersecurity and digital safety products
Qualifications & Experience
Juris Doctor (JD) and admission to practice in at least one U.S. state (California Bar admission or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in California strongly preferred)
Approximately 7–12 years of legal experience
Prior experience as product counsel, privacy counsel, or technology transactions counsel within a technology, SaaS, or consumer-facing digital business or law firm experience
Strong experience working directly with product and engineering teams on technology, AI, or data-driven products
Deep understanding of U.S. privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA) with exposure to GDPR strongly preferred
Familiarity with AI/ML systems, generative AI tools, or data-intensive consumer technology products highly desirable
Experience at a top-tier law firm and/or leading in-house technology company strongly preferred
Skills & Competencies
Strong ability to translate complex legal, regulatory, and technical concepts into practical product guidance
Excellent drafting, negotiation, and stakeholder communication skills
Strong commercial judgment and pragmatic, solution-oriented mindset
Comfortable operating independently in a fast-paced, iterative product development environment
Strong judgment in navigating novel and evolving legal issues, particularly in AI regulation and governance
High degree of ownership, with ability to influence without formal authority across technical and non-technical teams
Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across product, engineering, security, and compliance functions
Proactive, adaptable, and comfortable shaping frameworks in areas with limited precedent
