Sr. Director, Technology Finance Analyst, Remote USAbout the role: Gartner Analysts are industry thought leaders who create must-have insights, market predictions and best practices for a broad range of world-leading organizations. A Senior Director serves as a leader within Gartner’s Business and Technology Insights (BTI) group, establishing oneself as a credible voice within their designated market at local, regional and global levels. Utilizing exceptional research and analytical skills, a Senior Director plays a significant role in producing pragmatic and provocative insights which Gartner clients consume and apply to propel their business toward key objectives. They are a trusted source of advice for clients, reinforcing Gartner’s value every day by engaging them via in-person meetings, virtual meetings, sales support visits and Gartner conferences to discuss complex client challenges and offer appropriate recommendations. A Senior Director possesses a keen eye for identifying gaps, problems and solutions within the market they serve. They use their knowledge to help clients make better decisions, solve complex issues and execute new practices that propel clients’ businesses toward key objectives and publish these pragmatic and/or provocative insights. Additionally, they reinforce Gartner’s value every day by engaging clients via in-person and virtual meetings, sales support visits, Gartner conferences and industry events. Gartner is looking for a Senior Director to provide insight to CIOs in the discipline of IT Financial Management (ITFM) guiding CIOs' through key priorities such as technology budgeting, spend transparency, cost optimization, AI and cloud economics, and value-focused governance.Important: This is not a corporate FP&A position. The role focuses on IT Financial Management (ITFM) and requires hands‑on experience supporting CIO organizations, technology budgeting, service tower costing, and cloud/AI economics. Candidates must have prior exposure to technology finance, ITFM/TBM practices, or FinOps/cloud cost governance. General FP&A backgrounds without technology‑specific finance experience will not be considered.Your experience will ideally come from working closely with CIOs, including:Experience in IT Finance. Gartner is looking for your leadership in the discipline of IT Finance. Areas such as IT budgeting, cost benchmarking, costing, allocation, chargeback, strategic cost management, AI and cloud spend analysis and governance.Background in vendors and tool selection from IT Finance technology providers.Demonstrated commitment to staying current on the economic and governance impacts of AI and cloud (e.g., unit economics, consumption pricing, FinOps practices), and on vendor pricing shifts that materially affect CIO budgets and value realization.What you will do:Create innovative, thought provoking, and highly leveraged “must-have” insights that directly address the priorities and challenges of CIO clientsServing as an authority on how CIOs must establish and execute sound financial management of the technology budget and business outcome driven initiatives across IT and the broader enterprise.Delivering strong positions on best and emerging practices for CIOs to manage finances which results in reduced operating costs and positive business outcomesPresenting on IT Financial management content and related thought leadership in one-to-one and one-to-many forums, including client presentations and Gartner eventsDeveloping predictions and scenarios about the future of IT Financial Management and the implications and actions for CIOsDevelop new insights and ideas through thought leadership and offer compelling, actionable approaches to client's needs and requests that accelerate the client's ability to actDevelop in-depth analysis to identify the root cause of a client’s barriers or overall needs and reframe thinking to drive strategy forwardDemonstrate thought leadership in establishing insights positions across a team of analystsBring provocative, independent insights to Gartner leaders that can evolve the course of a research agendaResearch, analyze and predict market trends and shifts to provide clients and vendors with actionable insightsProvide clients and prospects with actionable advice aligned to technology finance via virtual or face-to-face interactionsCreate and deliver high value presentation materials on and off stage for Gartner events, industry and professional association conferences, and client briefingsSupport BTI and Sales: Provide sales support serving as voice of the market to help Insights teams create content and to drive engagement with clients to make progress against their critical priorities to grow their businessProvide high quality and timely content peer reviewBuild credibility as an industry expert to represent Gartner insights, methodology and strategyActively participate in innovation, ideation, and research discussions and collaborate effectively with peers in the Insights communityIdentify research process improvements or develop new processes that help the team and BTI provide excellent service deliveryBe a mentor and a coach by supporting more junior team membersBe client-centric while actively seeking to help clients engage regularly and often with Gartner insights and interactionWhat you will need:Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; Graduate degree preferred12+ years of relevant field or industry experience in a finance or leadership role, at least 3 years in an IT Finance roleMinimum 3–5 years supporting IT, Technology, or CIO organizations, not enterprise FP&A.Demonstrated experience with IT budgeting and cost structures, including run vs change, infra/app/platform cost components.Hands‑on with IT cost transparency tools or TBM/ITFM tooling (Apptio, Cloudability, Nicus, MagicOrange, YäRKEN, etc.).Experience building chargeback/showback models, allocation methodologies, or service unit costs.Understanding of cloud consumption economics, AWS/Azure/GCP billing, RI/SP decisions, or AI workload cost drivers.Subject Expertise:A current and demonstrated understanding of the key components of modern IT Finance including the use and application of AI and ITFM tools.A solid understanding of IT Budgeting and the role and application of cost BenchmarkingExperience in IT costing, cost allocation, chargeback/showback and cost modelsStrong understand of accounting fundamentals including the role and use of the Chart of Accounts and Cost Centres.Spend analysis including fixed and variable costs, consumption spend (i.e. cloud and AI), run and project costs.Cost evaluation and cost reduction strategies.Exposure to ITFM Tools, ideally including one of Apptio, Nicus, MagicOrange, or Yarken.Hands-on cloud financial management ideally with FinOps experience that connects ITFM, TBM, and cloud unit economics.Demonstrated expertise in at least two of:Governing emerging AI/GenAI spendManaging and communicating the shift from Opex to CapexThe shift from Projects to ProductsITAM, ITSM, or other adjacent capabilitiesDemonstrate executive presence; can immediately establish credibility with executives and additional stakeholdersStrong organizational skills; able to manage high volumes of complex work at pace while delivering consistently high-quality outputs.Demonstrate excellence in research and English writing ability;
